Description DISCUSSION: FORMING A GROWTH MINDSET FOR LEARNING STATISTICS ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS must support their assertions with at least 2 scholarly citations in current APA format. Any sources cited must have been published within the last five years. Acceptable sources include the Discussion video; other scholarly, peer-reviewed articles or book chapters; the textbook; and the Bible. PREPARATION Watch the short video titled Watch: Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset located in the assigned Module under the Learn section. BACKGROUND Many psychology students who start a statistics course report being anxious about taking statistics (Smith & Capuzzi, 2019). The reasons tend to break down into several common categories, including anxiety about statistics tests, anxiety about interpreting data, and anxiety about how they might appear to the professor. These anxieties are often based on fixed mindsets developed earlier in life, especially related to math skills. Many students have not encountered situations in which they understand that a growth mindset can help alleviate these anxieties and encourage a more positive attitude towards their courses (Smith & Capuzzi, 2019). The following statements are based on the Statistics Anxiety Rating Scale (STARS) (Cruise et al., 1985) as reported in Hanna et al. (2008). 1. I have not done math for a long time, so getting through statistics is going to be almost impossible. 2. I do not have enough brains to get through statistics. 3. I can’t ask my professor for help because I will appear unintelligent. 4. No matter how much I study, I will not be able to make a good grade on a statistics test. 5. I will never be able to understand the statistics reported in journal articles. THREAD PROMPT ? Based on the Watch: Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset video, briefly describe the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. (Note: you do not have to read the articles cited above, which are for reference only.) ? Choose one of the five statements from the list above that you believe most pertains to you and describe why it is an example of a fixed mindset. ? Write about how you could change this belief/statement to reflect a growth mindset related to taking this statistics class. ? The Bible addresses anxiety and growth in many places, and some Biblical figures struggle with anxiety or demonstrate growth in different ways. Choose a verse, a short passage, or a character that deals with anxiety or growth (or both!) and discuss how your choice can encourage a growth mindset for you during the class. Avoid long quotations.
